Mavs Monthly Volume 1

The people behind Mavericks Fastpitch.

Mavericks Fastpitch is up and running! First off, thank you to everybody who attended tryouts and those who have decided to join our inaugural Mavericks Fastpitch teams. Everything we have set up, and everything we plan on doing, is for you and your betterment and we cannot wait to see what you can accomplish. Secondly, thank you to our awesome group of coaches that helped to make tryouts such a success! Without you this wouldn’t have happened, and I am proud to have been able to assemble such a wonderful team of coaches for our first season. For our first blog installment, or “Mavs Monthly” as I have dubbed it, I thought I would introduce myself and the rest of our coaching staff.

Who Are We?

Director/14U
Ryan Bliss

I am twenty six years old, live in Elyria with my girlfriend Megan and pup Achilles, graduated from Wellington in 2011 and Oberlin College in 2015 where I played on the conference champion baseball team and studied Neuroscience. I enjoy watching Cleveland sports (especially the Indians), rock climbing, photography, gardening, and reading. I enjoy science fiction including but not limited too; Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel Universe, Game of Thrones, and Jurassic Park. I am an avid traveler and have played baseball in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, to go along with the season I played in Adelaide Australia. Professionally I have been a strength and conditioning coach/ personal trainer since I was 18 years old. As director of the organization it is my job to handle all of the behind the scenes action such as finding coaches, setting up tryouts, managing the website, ordering uniforms, registering for tournaments, answering parent inquiries etc…. I try to be a light hearted and easy going individual and hope to be an approachable and inviting director for Mavericks Fastpitch.

16U Head Coach Rich Buttolph

I am 43 years old and live in LaGrange with my wife of nearly 23 years, Pam, my son Brandon and our yorkie Bandit.  We have 3 children, Alisha, Brandon and Ashley. I graduated from John Marshall High School in 1994 and attended The Ohio State University from 1994-1996.  I’m employed at the United States Postal Service where I’ve delivered mail on the west side of Cleveland for the last 21 years. I am an avid sports fan that has season tickets for the three major Cleveland sports teams so I can be located in downtown Cleveland quite often.  Our youngest daughter, Ashley, is currently a sophomore at Ursuline College and playing softball so we enjoy traveling to watch her play and try to make as many games as possible. I’ve been coaching fastpitch softball for 15 years, a majority of them at a very high level, and I can’t wait to get started with the 16U Mavericks!

12U Head Coach Kailey Myers

I am a 22 year old from Norton Ohio! I have an Australian Shepard pup who is my frisbee catchin’ best friend! My favorite movie is ‘The Heat”, in my free time I enjoy hiking and watching sports, and tacos are my favorite food. I just graduated from Slippery Rock University with my Bachelors degree in Healthcare Administration, and I am currently training to become a nursing home administrator. While I am completing this training I am also working to finish my Masters degree in Health Information Management with plans to graduate again this upcoming Spring! Throughout my softball career I have always wanted to become a coach. I want to give young players the knowledge and fundamentals that are expected in a college atmosphere that many incoming Freshman, including myself at one point, were never taught! I consider myself to be an outgoing and approachable person and can’t wait to start coaching young Mavericks!

10U Head Coach Ashley Helmink

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley Helmink and I currently live in North Ridgeville! I graduated from North Ridgeville High School where I played 4 years of varsity softball. I also was a part of the Siena Heights University softball program all 4 years where we won our conference tournament for the first time in 36 years, making it to Nationals! The last travel team I played for, before I got too old, was M.C. Madness! I currently work at AML RightSource where I look at financial crimes, and I am enrolled at Tiffin University for their Master’s in Criminal Justice, with a concentration in Crime Analysis! In my free time I enjoy spending time with my dog Maddie and working out. I am a big fan of the Cleveland Indians, and have season tickets this year! One of my favorite places to go would be Disney Land, as it is a place my family loves to go all together! I am excited to be a part of this new organization, and cannot wait to see where this season takes us!
